Three gives MiFi router a makeover

Mobile operator Three has unveiled the second generation of its MiFi personal wireless hotspot device.

The MiFi, also known as the Huawei E585 under its Three-branded skin, is a battery-powered Wi-Fi router that plugs into a laptop and distributes Three's Mobile Broadband service wirelessly to connected devices in the area.

Like the original, first introduced last year, the second-generation MiFi creates a personal Wi-Fi hotspot that can be accessed by up to five wireless-enabled devices simultaneously. However, the new version adds one-button connection, an upgraded OLED screen and an online dashboard compatible with any web browser.

The OLED screen displays a variety of information, including the amount of data used, the current connection speed, and total length of browsing time. Three claims the battery life is significantly improved, while it takes just 30 per cent of the time to charge as the old unit.

“Connect devices need a strong 3G connection like ours, especially when you're on the move. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our mobile internet offering. Following the launch of our first MiFi device, our customers asked for changes to made,” said Mark Brewer, Three's head of broadband devices.

“We worked with Huawei to incorporate features like 'one button to connect', an improved screen and a great browser dashboard that works across Windows, Mac and Linux devices. We now have a device that customers will enjoy even more."

The new-look Three MiFi should be hitting the shelves in early to mid-July, and will be cheapest for Three's pay as you go mobile broadband packages, costing a penny shy of £50. Prices on other contract types have yet to be confirmed.
