BT has announced unlimited access to 1.5 million of its FON and Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK for its Total Broadband customers as it targets the ever-growing mobile user base in the UK.

Previously, there were limits on using FON and Openzone hotspots, depending on what BT Total Broadband option a user was signed up to, but now all customers, including existing ones, are able to take advantage of the unlimited Wi-Fi access.

BT said that with the dawn of the iPad and other tablets, along with the increasing uptake of other mobile devices and O2’s decision to end its unlimited 3G offering, it wants to provide greater access to the UK’s on-the-move public.

John Petter, consumer managing director for BT Retail, said that BT expects to have more than 2.5 million hotspots by the end of 2011.

“This continuing level of expansion means that these networks are rapidly becoming the simplest way for people to access the internet when out and about,” he added in a statement.

The development comes hot on the heels of BT’s recent committment to provide 87 per cent of all homes and small businesses in London with fibre broadband capabilities by spring 2011.
