Dell: Customers aren't ready for flash drives

Dell has claimed it will support flash drives. Just not yet.

Dell will head in the direction of flash drives in the future but it just doesn't see the customer demand for them right now.

So claims Andrew Holloway, storage solutions specialist at Dell, who claimed the company had looked into it but it just wasn't what customers wanted.

“We looked at the pros and cons... but what is the point in investing in something customers wont buy?” he said during the Dell Tech Camp, held today at London's O2.

“We'd rather invest in something they want to [buy] today.”

The main thing holding back Dell from flash is the price.

“Dell will move that way,” Holloway added, “but they are so expensive, that is the big issue.”

He agreed people were moving away from SATA but it would take a lot of people to get involved to move the industry on.

“It has got to have a big uptake,” concluded Holloway. “Customers need to start asking for it and the industry needs to drive the price down.”
