IBM has launched a new appliance that consolidates data breach prevention with information and web application security in one package.

The IBM Security Network Intrusion Prevention System is designed to offer organisations a holistic approach, eradicating the need for multiple point solutions.

The appliance brings together various security functions, including an automated virtual patch technology that detects and blocks threats.

Big Blue’s solution incorporates improved network protection as well, designed to fight zero-day threats before they can affect a company’s IT infrastructure.

A “single view of security” is better at preventing potential threats before networks can be compromised, said Steve Robinson, general manager for IBM Security Solutions.

"Effective threat and vulnerability management needs to focus on preventing problems, not responding to them," Robinson added.

Users will also be able to take advantage of IBM X-Force research, providing them with direct access to the most up-to-date security updates, even before the vendors issue their own patches.

According to the 2009 IBM X-Force Trend and Risk Report, over half of vulnerabilities did not have a vendor supplied patch by the end of last year.

The company said over two years before the notable Conficker worm was even discovered, X-Force research had identified the threat and issued virtual patch protection, meaning customers were already prepared.
