IBM has finally got together with AMD to launch a System x server featuring an Opteron 6100 processor.

The processor – codenamed Magny-Cours – was launched back in March, with Acer backing it for use in its own servers from day one.

However, it has taken Big Blue five more months to incorporate it into its own four socket server designs.

The IBM System x3755 M3 rack server is a 2U box which can contain up to four processors, 32 memory slots and 16TB of storage. Fans, power supplies and hard drives are all hot-swappable and the latter has RAID protection.

“The addition of the System x3755 M3 to our portfolio is another example of our focus on client solutions,” said Bob Galush, vice president of System x at IBM.

“Clients that run heavily threaded workloads like Java, virtualisation and transaction processing can increase their performance with a dense, cost-effective solution.”

Despite the new support for AMD, the company has also released another Intel Xeon-based rack server as well – a two socket System x3630 M3 rack.

This product focuses on how much the server can store locally, however, with 28TB of storage on offer.

The products are expected to ship from the end of September.
