    Green IT shows green shoots

If Tesco is using IT to promote environmental efficiency, the rest of the industry should take notice.

But rather than seeing the need to reduce emissions as another regulatory burden, businesses should look more broadly at the way they operate and especially, whether they use IT to its full. Often it is relatively small incremental investments in technology that drive significant green benefits, whether it is greater support for home working and teleworking, and more use of video conferencing, or supply chain or transportation improvements. IT can even help ensure that businesses have the right numbers of staff in the right place at the right time, which also brings environmental and cash benefits.

CIOs and IT directors should be at the forefront of promoting more efficient, and greener, ways of work. Of course, if the wider business is to take this seriously, they also need to put their own house in order, especially when it comes to energy use in the data centre. That’s no bad thing, either.
