Week in review: Apple makes noise, Dell sneaks off quietly
By Jennifer Scott,
Not one, but two iOS updates
This week saw Apple’s yearly music based press conference, unveiling revamped iPods, a new version of iTunes and even finishing with a few songs from Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
But Steve Jobs also confirmed two new iterations of his company’s mobile operating system – iOS – were on their way.
The first update – iOS 4.1 – will be available as a free download on iTunes from next week on the iPhone and iPod Touch whereas the second – iOS 4.2 – won’t be out until November but will be available to iPad users.
HP victorious in the battle for 3PAR
The fight is over. Dell has thrown in the towel and let HP come out on top in the fierce bidding war for storage company 3PAR.
Dell attempted one more bid to topple HP, but after its rival returned with a bid for $2.35 billion, it called it a day and walked away from the acquisition attempt.
Now as week closes, so does the deal, with HP and 3PAR shaking hands for the agreed amount. All the legal loopholes expect to be completed by the end of this calendar year.
Best of the rest
The HP/3PAR deal wasn’t the only acquisition on the cards this week, with Intel buying the wireless division of Infineon and 3M getting hold of Cogent.
BT tried to put the ASA ruling behind it and instead celebrated reaching 15 million broadband customers.
Finally, Samsung has unveiled its tablet device, the Galaxy Tab, in an attempt to take on the might of Apple’s iPad.
