Compellent teams up with VMware for cloud disaster recovery

The companies may have already partnered, but last night saw Compellent and VMware launch a bundled product to provide for disaster recovery in the cloud.

Compellent’s Storage Center releases, which use Fluid Data Storage – a block architecture to help manage storage at a more granular level – will now come with VMware’s vCenter Site Recovery Manager – an automated data centre disaster recovery (DR) solution.

The two companies claimed by bringing together Compellent’s storage virtualisation technologies, such as remote replication, automated tiered storage and thin provisioning, with VMware’s virtualised DR capabilities, customers would be able to move into a cloud model safely and, with the added automation, simply.

As part of the foundation for cloud computing, the automation provided by Compellent and VMware virtualisation enables enterprises and service providers to reduce disaster recovery costs, increase hardware efficiency, automate data movement and optimise network infrastructure.

“The combined solution is the next step in a pragmatic approach to creating and protecting cloud environments through simplified disaster recovery,” said a joint statement from the companies.

As well as simplicity, the companies claimed there were cost savings to be made with the reduction of hardware expenditure and smaller staff costs thanks to simple management.

However, you would still have to lay down upwards of $83,000 for the initial set up, which includes: Clustered Series 40 controllers, Fluid Data software licenses, VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 25 VM pack and around 6TB of tiered 2.5 inch 6Gb/s SAS storage.
