EMC announces new deduple and backup systems
By Alan Lu,
EMC has announced several new storage products aimed at the enterprise. Unsurprisingly, competitors have cast doubt on the company's claims of product excellence.
Among the 40 new products announced by EMC, the Data Domain Deduplication Array stood out. Equipped with two new Data Domain DD890 controllers, EMC claimed it was the world's fastest deduplication system, with a throughput of 26.3TB an hour (or 7,300MB/s) - seven times faster than its nearest competitor.
Also notable was the new Data Domain Archiver, a long-term backup and archive system. It uses the new Data Domain DD860 controller with claimed transfer speeds of 9.8TB an hour and support for up to 768TB of raw capacity. The company claimed this disk-based system minimised the need for tape.
However, rival NetApp has disputed the significance of EMC's new products. Manish Goel, NetApp's executive vice president of products, stated in surprisingly robust language that "today's EMC news is another example of the storage industry playing catch up to NetApp."
He also characterised EMC's announcements as an example of a rival "trying to plug holes in their existing portfolios to keep pace" with NetApp.
Both the Data Domain Deduplication Array and Archiver are available now.
