Skype launches Android video calling
By Paul Briden,
Skype has unveiled the latest version of its Android app, which will enable users to make 1-to-1 video calls to fellow Skype contacts.
The functionality builds on what's already available for those using the iPhone and Mac and Windows PCs, extending it out to a wider audience. Earlier this week, Google's Andy Rubin suggested the company experiences 500,000 new Android phone activations each day.
The app is free to download and can make use of both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. On top of this the app allows both local and international calls and texts to landlines and mobiles using Skype’s own rates.
The app interface has been given a “complete redesign” according to the developers, including a new main menu and screens that enable editing of your Skype profile, complete with quick-change mood and status settings.
Users can now also check their Skype Credit balance directly in the app through a handy menu.
"We are committed to bring Skype Video Calling to as many platforms as possible and are delighted to deliver on this with our new updated Skype for Android app," said Neil Stevens, vice president and general manager for product and marketing at Skype.
The video calling functionality over Skype will be supported by Android-based handsets including the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and the Google Nexus S.
