Vodafone to offer public cloud services

Vodafone is set to offer its internal cloud services to the public, according to a senior executive from the firm.

Shane Gaffney, head of IT operations at Vodafone Ireland, gave a presentation at this week’s HP Discover in Vienna, detailing how his company had utilised HP management software and cloud services to cut costs by €1.2 million.

He then revealed it was part of the global firm’s road map to replicate the cloud environment it ran in-house for the general public too and had even been a factor in the design process.

“With the cloud portal we built for our internal customers... we had one eye on that to take it out to external customers,” said Gaffney. “They have the same needs for that type of view.”

He said Vodafone was “focused on offering cloud services from a number of angles” thanks to the wide range of communications pies it has its fingers in.

“Its really looking at the services Vodafone provides, [such as] fixed line services, mobile and convergence,” added Gaffney.

“Once we can plug those services into our tools... plugging them into that cloud portal allows them to present information a lot [better].”

He concluded plans were in their “early days” so it may be sometime before we see anything hit the market, but he was confident it would happen.

“It is a desire we have but it is not [happening] yet,” said Gaffney. “It is part of the road map though.”
