    Big Data boosts Acunu

Acunu’s Big Data platform means big business as the Silicon Roundabout firm wings its way to Silicon Valley.

London start-up Acunu has announced its expansion into the US, thanks to the success of its Big Data platform.

The company's lead product, the Acunu Data Platform, acts as the basis for Big Data applications. Using Apache Cassandra open source software, it enables users to build data storage and processing features, which in turn tackle the deluge of unstructured data hitting businesses today.

Acunu - founded in 2009 by three Cambridge graduates - is now ready to spread its wings and make the move from Silicon Roundabout to Silicon Valley, setting up a new office in San Francisco.

Tom Wilkie, vice president of engineering and one of the founding members of the company, will head up the branch, which goes against the norm of West Coast start-ups working their way over to Europe.

“The US market offers more use-cases for Big Data solutions than anywhere else and our expansion is recognition of that fact," he said.

Tim Moreton, Acunu's CEO, added: “We’ve achieved significant growth in Europe and we’re now in a very strong position to move into new markets.”

“We believe we have something unique to offer US businesses as their Big Data needs become greater.”

Big Data is set to be one of the biggest trends in technology for 2012, according to analyst firm Gartner, while Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, called on companies to take advantage of all the new information available to them to help their businesses grow.
