UK still dragging its heels on adoption of mobile technology

Organisational worries about data protection and theft are holding back UK investment in mobile technology and associated remote working.

By Maggie Holland, 24 Jul 2006 at 11:37

UK businesses are lagging behind their European counterparts when it comes to adopting mobile technology as they remain unconvinced of the benefits, according to new research.

A study of more than 200 chief information officers from blue chip companies across Europe placed the UK as the fifth most mobile-friendly region, behind the Nordics, Spain, the Netherlands and France.

But the country jumped up a position when it came to actual investment in mobile technology, nestling behind Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The study highlighted that, in spite of the productivity and business efficiency benefits mobile technology can deliver, many UK firms are yet to take it seriously.

"Mobility has come of age and is no longer an initiative in its own right but a key part of all our infrastructure and development programmes," said Richard Hall, UK chief technology officer at Avanade, which commissioned the research.

"A wide choice of devices, coupled with a common user interface and business logic shared with desktop applications allow us to address all the top five barriers to investment and demonstrate business return."

The research was undertaken as part of Avanade's 2006 European Mobility Index. It found that, while there are many drivers promoting mobile investment, organisations still view data protection and theft as the main barriers to adoption.
