Yahoo and Symantec go up against McAfee and Microsoft in battle for consumer business
By by Emerald Kaye,
Yahoo and Symantec have teamed up on a joint security initiative to challenge current leaders like Microsoft and McAfee.
Today, the two parties launched Norton Internet Security software provided by Yahoo with the aim of giving consumers the peace of mind they need to ensure they can surf the web without worrying about Internet-based security threats.
Extending an existing co-branding partnership, the security suite will be distributed to millions of consumers through the Yahoo network. It features Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall and aims to detect and block spyware, viruses, unauthorised intruders and spam.
"Internet security is important to our Yahoo users and by working with Symantec we are bringing the comfortable security blanket that their Norton brand services provide to consumers around the world," said Stephen Miller, director, product management of Yahoo.
Initially, consumers can take advantage of a 30-day free trial of the new security solution, downloadable here.. After that period, a 12-month subscription is available at a special promotional price of $49.99, a twenty dollar discount on a similar package from Symantec.
Enrique Salem, group president, consumer products and solutions, Symantec, added: "Symantec and Yahoo share a vision of protecting consumers online and we are thrilled to partner to offer Symantec products to Yahoo's audience of hundreds of millions globally. Internet security is a necessity for consumers today."
