    T-Mobile quadruples data download speeds

Its first HSDPA handset comes to the UK with speeds up to four times faster than 3G

By Iain Thomson, 15 Aug 2006 at 11:55

T-Mobile has launched its first handset that supports High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA), which claims to deliver data download speeds that quadruple existing 3G performance.

The MDA Vario II handset will be capable of a claimed 1.8 megabits per second data transfer on T-Mobile's HSDPA network, which covers the same proportion of the country as its 3G network. The company doesn't release figures on total network coverage but users can check if they have coverage here.

"By launching the MDA Vario II, T-Mobile is ensuring that our customers are the first to truly experience broadband-speed connectivity on the move via their mobile phone," said Derek Williamson, head of business marketing at T-Mobile UK.

The new handset is built around the Windows Mobile 5 platform, which includes the Direct Push email software that is intended to compete with RIM's Blackberry. However users will need to be running Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2.

Other features include a QWERTY keyboard, two megapixel camera and Bluretooth connection. Buying the phone without a contract will cost £299.
