Americans lag behind Europeans in IP take up

Organisations in the UK and rest of Europe are more tuned in to the benefits of IP than US peers.

By Maggie Holland, 30 Aug 2006 at 17:42

Europe is racing ahead of the US when it comes to IP adoption, according to research.

Almost half of European enterprises have deployed MPLS IP virtual private networks, compared to just a third in North America, claims a report from Forrester Research.

Similarly, the number of non IP advocates in Europe has dropped by almost 20 per cent from 37 per cent to 16 per cent.

Furthermore, the research suggests that businesses plan to invest more heavily in newer technologies like site-to-site VOIP.

Four out of 10 of respondents said that moving their voice traffic to an IP network was high on their agenda for this year, with 30 per cent hoping to complete their migrations in 2007.

The report also found that European IT decision makers are leading the way when it comes to the adoption of managed network services.

Just yesterday, Virgin Atlantic announced that it had signed a two-year managed network services deal with Affiniti in a bid to boost staff productivity and customer satisfaction.

More than half (53 per cent) of companies in North America have turned their nose up at the managed approach, compared to just 18 per cent of doubters closer to home.

But there is interest in embracing VPNs or IP communications technologies as a managed service by 2009.

"This is good news for telcos: The majority of enterprises would look to their service provider to provide managed network services," said Phil Sayer, senior analyst at Forrester's European Telecoms and Networks division.
