Future looks bleak for iPod phone

Apple's rumoured iPod phone could fail as consumers fail to bite on a combination device from the company proves less than attractive

By Iain Thomson, 4 Sep 2006 at 14:53

A survey of British consumers has found little interest in buying an iPod phone from Apple.

Research carried out by Entertainment Media Research among 3,000 British consumers found that barely one in five was interested in buying an iPod which could also be used as a phone from Apple, although nearly half would consider buying a combination device from a handset manufacturer like Nokia.

Peter Roper, founder of EMR, said that he thought consumers found voice communications more important than music and so would only really trust a mobile manufacturer for a combination device.

Overall demand for such a combined device was still low however, with over a third of those surveyed saying they did not want one.

There was more bad news for companies involved with mobile music in the survey. Only a quarter of respondents showed any interest in downloading music to their mobile, a rise of only four per cent from last year despite intensive marketing campaigns.

Of those only four per cent said they would be very likely to purchase music via mobile download, compared to 44 per cent who showed no interest at all.
