Fujitsu moves its hard drives vertical

Company gets into the game a little late compared to competition

By by Guy Matthews, 4 Sep 2006 at 15:44

Fujitsu's first hard drive using perpendicular technology will soon be on sale.

Fujitsu was one of the pioneers of perpendicular recording when the technology was first announced in 2002. But it has watched as a number of other vendors got their products to market first, including Toshiba, Hitachi and Seagate.

Fujitsu claims that while its new 160GB 2.5-inch drive has the same theoretical capacity as its rivals, it has improved performance. Plus, by being based on the SATA rather than ATA standard, it is well timed to meet demand for that type of drive, it claims.

"Notebook makers will begin requiring 160GB SATA hard disk drives by early 2007, so Fujitsu is introducing the new perpendicular recording series at the perfect time to meet this demand," said Joel Hagberg, vice president of marketing and business development for the vendor.

Fujitsu says its new drive, which also ships as an 80GB model, has added shock resistance for a laptop market than demands greater ruggedness.

Perpendicular storage boosts the capacity of hard disks by aligning the magnetic domains vertically. Analysts say that perpendicular storage will become the dominant drive standard until peaking in 2011 with a theoretical maximum density of around 1TB per square inch.
