Dell/Symantec offer to make Exchange secure

New server bundle could make Microsoft's email system much more secure

By Ambrose McNevin, 22 Sep 2006 at 15:53

Dell and Symantec have teamed to ship "Secure Exchange" a server/storage/software bundle for security, back up and archiving for Microsoft Exchange aimed at 500 to 2,000 seat sites.

The slice and dice hardware and software package comprises Dell PowerEdge servers, PowerVault storage, and Symantec Mail Security 8200 Series, Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange, Symantec Enterprise Vault and Backup Exec.

Shipping in the US and Europe and targeted squarely at the mid market a $55,000 500 seat entry level configuration comprises Dell PowerEdge 1950s, PowerVault 110T and M1000, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Symantec Backup Exec.

Jeremy Burton, group president security and data management group at Symantec said in a conference call that the thinking behind the partnership was to simplify the Exchange security options available to SMEs.

He said SMEs are confused by a market populated by hundreds of security companies and where trapped between the complexity and long deployment times for separate anti virus and anti spam products and increasing regulatory, litigation and compliance pressures.

In the same call Brad Anderson, a Dell vice president that email security is becoming increasingly important to SMEs noting that 94% of all the emails received daily by Dell is spam, or as he put it, Dell receives 400 million potential intrusions each day.
