Ofcom promotes former Blair aide
By Maggie Holland,
Communications regulator Ofcom yesterday revealed the identity of its new chief executive.
The watchdog has appointed Ed Richards who has been a member of the board since 2003, most recently in the position of chief operating officer (COO).
Before joining Ofcom, Richards was Tony Blair's senior policy advisor, providing the Labour prime minister with guidance in the areas of media, telecoms, internet and e-government.
His other previous roles include working as controller of corporate strategy at the BBC and providing consulting expertise for London Economics Ltd.
"Ed has played a critically important role in the establishment of Ofcom," said the regulator's chairman David Currie.
"He has a profound understanding of the markets we regulate and is ideally placed to lead the organisation into the future."
Richards, who stepped up to the role of COO in July 2005 is clearly excited about what lies ahead. He said: "This is a fascinating job in a fascinating and fast changing area. We have a strong organisation, committed people and a track record that we intend to build on.
"I am thoroughly looking forward to the challenges."
