Recruits needed for network downtime study

Warwick Business School plans to find out how much downtime is really costing businesses in the UK

By Maggie Holland, 26 Oct 2006 at 15:33

Warwick Business School (WBS) has teamed up with a network support specialist to launch a nationwide survey to investigate the true cost of technology downtime to businesses.

The results of the research, dubbed 'State of the Nation IT Support Review' will be published next year.

Working with, Networks First, WBS is asking companies with more than 500 employees to take part in the web-based survey to help identify service issues and cost implications.

The researchers are calling for input from all sectors to analyse the effects of poor network management and aims to study the full gamut of issues and their impact from temporary loss of email connectivity to more mission critical problems.

"Companies simply don't have a clue what downtime is costing them," said Peter Titmus, managing director at Networks First.

"Some estimate the cost at £1 million per minute whilst others have no idea how much even a temporary loss of email costs them in terms of business... We want to get everyone thinking about their networks. Where their networks start, where they end, the part they play in their business and who is looking after them."
