No let up on Motorola acquisition spree as it buys Netopia

The mobile giant's appetite for acquisition has not been quashed as it shells out for yet another company

By Maggie Holland, 15 Nov 2006 at 10:31

Barely a few days have passed since news broke of Motorola's acquisition of Good Technology, but the company has opened up its purse strings again to snap up Netopia for $208 million.

Yesterday, Motorola confirmed that it has acquired the company, which makes modems, routers and gateways for DSL networks, in a move it believes will help beef up its IPTV offering.

This is the third acquisition the company has made in recent months.

Prior to last week's purchase of Good Technology, in September it bought Symbol Technologies for $3.9 billion to boost its vertical presence and enterprise capabilities.

Once the Netopia deal has closed, which is expected early next year, Netopia will become part of Motorola's Connected Home Solutions business.

The move complements the company's existing voice and data product portfolio and will enable it to offer a suite of home CPE for copper-based networks, such as IP set-top boxes, home media hubs and voice gateways.

The acquisition will also bolster Motorola's device management capabilities.

"Motorola and Netopia share a common vision of the connected home as the hub for seamless mobility," said Dan Moloney, president of Motorola's Connected Home Solutions division.

"This acquisition advances our vision by strengthening the Connected Home Solutions business position as a leading supplier of technology and services to telecom providers worldwide."
