Toshiba spins 100GB 1.8in hard disk drive

Toshiba has donned the laurels, proclaiming itself the first to bring out a 100GB 1.8in hard disk drive.

By Matt Whipp, 5 Dec 2006 at 13:23

Brandishing the snappy appellation MK1011GAH, the disk uses two platters and has seek times rated around 15ms. It uses an ATA-7 interface, capable of data transfer rates up to 100MB/s and it draws around 0.003 Watts per GB of power.

It also offers shock resistance, making it robust enough for use in mobile devices and other consumer gadgets. It weighs 59g and is less than a centimetre thick.

'Our new 100GB marks a turning point for the industry by reaching a major milestone in storage capacity for small form factor drives,' explained Martin Larsson, General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division. 'I can remember when 100GB was only possible in desk bound PCs yet with our new hard disk drive, designers can bring to market pocket-sized devices that pack just as much storage punch.'
