The top five robots of all time

Robots are back in the headlines, with he Science Museum publicly debuting one of the advanced robots in the UK, BERTI, which is a life sized humanoid robot built to mimic a key component of human communication - gesturing.
The robot is capable of playing a game of Scissors, Paper, Stone, with Kat Nilsson of the Science Museum saying: “As robots become ever more sophisticated and find their way into our homes and workplaces, it’s vital we feel comfortable in their presence.”
To celebrate BERTI, I’ve decided to compile a list of some of my favourite robots - both real and from my geeky childhood.
- 1 Optimus Prime
The leader of the Autobots is my all time favourite robot. Forgetting the fact he’s not real for a second, he’s what every leader should be - big, red and with the ability to turn into a truck. And he was always capable of laying the smack down on his arch enemy Megatron - who turned into a crappy gun. This confused me - how did he turn into a gun that Soundwave was able to shoot?
Megatron turning into a gun - though this is admittedly cool.
- 2 The real Transformer
Absolutely beautiful and turns dreams into reality. The WR-07 bot developed by Hemjii Soft Japan was capable of turning from a wheeled car into a hardened battle bot in seconds - so… damn… cool.
- 3 The dancing Citroen Robot
My robots have to be able to boogie - and this does it well. - Check out the remarkably good parodies.
The dancing old Citroen 2CV robot. You gotta remember these.
- 4 The Robot Wars Robots
These robots - usually created by geeky buddies with a little too much time on their hands - were remarkably good as they smashed the living crap out of each other with lots of spinny bits and lots of pointy bits. Craig Charles was the man… and I always had a soft spot for Philippa Forrester.

- 5 Robocop
It was a toss-up between the Terminator and Robocop, but I chose Robocop because 1 - I watched it last week, and 2 - he looks like a proper robot rather than a human with a robot endoskeleton. I think the bit where Murphy gets cut surrounded and cut down by Clarence and the criminals corrupted me for life. Anyway. It rules.
The brilliant Robocop rap - it explains the whole story in ten minutes.
