Microsoft had to redesign the whole graphics infrastructure for Vista to get the in-place switching from SLI to integrated graphics without a reboot - the Vista graphics driver is re-entrant. It’s a major change to an OS if it doesn’t already support it, means two graphics drivers in memory - and means the screen will have to blank momentarily as you switch. Better to ahve adaptive power on the GPU itself depending on what you’re displaying.
