Heard a great comment today - unfortunately I can’t claim it as my own - but I love the way it sums the situation up.
Linux users are like Real Ale aficionados - they all agree it’s better than lager (windows) but they can’t agree which flavour is best.
The image of Linux as a thick liquid brewed by a cohort of experts (many with worrying beards), to a myriad of different recipes (the scariest of which have “bits” of dubious provenance floating in them), all rather wonderful, but all likely to give you a thick head if you over indulge, just seems so appropriate!

I don’t think it matters which you use - But the reality is most linux distributions are based upon one/two packaging systems (both packaging the same code in different ways). Some people prefer the RPM way, some the .deb/apt approach.
Sure there are differences in the packaging (in the totally free os, vs one that allows non-GPL code) - but its all down to end-user choice.
Reality is all the important applications that users use, are actually available for all disributions - firefox, openoffice etc. This is the key thing, unlike windows - it doesn’t matter if you are running Debian vs Slackware… the same software will work. Unlike some software such as Office 97, which suddenly stopped working on Vista, forcing me to BUY a new copy.
And with linux if a package isn’t available for your OS you can always make your own.
So I agree. Especially about the worrying beards in both the Real Ale and Linux circles.

Are apps generally available ready to run for all major distribs?
I seem to remember having to build something last time I was on a Linux experiment. As a programmer it shouldn’t have phased me but finding the right libraries and stuff all got a bit tricky!
