I’m always ready to moan about PC - whether that’s Personal Computer or Political Correctness.

However before we had PC we had to deal our own cards at solitaire and had adverts (and attitudes) like this

Well it’s a bit saucy really. I was only explaining Supermarionation to my son the other day - a way of converting sound waves to impulses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarionation).

In the case of Supermarionation it is done to make Thunderbird puppets’ mouths move in time to the speech. In the case of http://www.ohmibod.com/  it’s for a whole other application. Lady Penelope would be shocked.

What I don’t understand is how this sort of thing seems to be cool when for women but less so for men. Inflatable doll jokes anyone?

Protect Kids from Porn - Sex Education Show vs Pornography

By Dave F in Reader

I’ve been watching the Sex Education Show vs Pornography on the tv. The claimed aim of the show is  expose (it does plenty of exposing!) myths that come from pornography and campaign to protect kids from on line porn. You always have to question the media (C4 more than others?) about whether they are genuinely trying to be educational or just sensationalising - especially on this kind of subject. Whatever the education / sensation balance I thought there was some valuable stuff in there.

One of the things they have been doing is challenging ISP’s & PC retailers to put protection on by default. Why aren’t safe search filters and parental controls set by default? Given that I’m not sure what they are talking about with “activating Parental Controls” we can assume most parents will find it a challenge to activate them. Of course the show implies that a couple of simple settings will keep your kids safe. I didn’t think it was that easy - please (please, PLEASE!) correct me if I’m wrong.

Somewhat depressingly, having visited their web site (http://sexperienceuk.channel4.com/sex-education) I can find nothing to actually help people to make the settings they are recommending. http://sexperienceuk.channel4.com/protect-from-porn tells you what you should do but not how - or how much good it will do.

The stats they quote on pornography (especially relating to kids exposure) is shocking - even allowing for some statistical massaging

  • 90% of children have accidentally viewed online pornography
  • The average age for first exposure to pornography is 11
  • That can’t be good - what can we do about it?

As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God - Matthew Parris

Not on an IT topic but a very interesting article from another publication

As an atheist, I truly believe Africa needs God | Matthew Parris - Times Online

Of course  as a Christian I am pleased to hear about the practical good Christians are doing but his comments about attitudes and philosophy are even more interesting.

I think, as with most things, the pendulum has swung too far in “cultural respect” PC sort of way. The time when we (”the west” “British Empire” “Christians”) told everyone else how to do it right (and when I say “it” I meaning everything - including “it”, that’s why it’s called “the missionary position”) has gone (thankfully) but in order to avoid imposing our values we don’t always speak up for what we believe to be right.

The BBC reported today about The Taliban bombing schools for the heinous crime of educating girls. That women shouldn’t be educated may be their belief but I don’t think it is cultural imperialism to argue against it. Once things get to the bombing stage obviously a great deal more is involved.

What we all need is to express what we believe in (”our beliefs” but that sounds a bit too spiritual) in an open and respectful way and maybe even have grown up conversations. Oh well, I can dream…

    Signs and Wonders

I’m off on yet more holidays - this time to
A Christian arts festival - but there is plenty of IT about. I may even be down for the stop frame animation workshops - I’ll let you know when I get back!
    Here’s a thought before I go
The Mail, how distasteful, but I heard about it on R4 so that’s better. Some 65 year olds object to be seen as old and infirm BUT they still want signs up telling drivers to be considerate to them. Some people just want their cake as well as eating it!
Maybe I should object to the “men” symbol, after all it doesn’t look much like me - I’m not black, seldom spread out like that and I don’t have a completely round head. Still it’s better than the “women” symbol - apparently all women wear skirts and only have one leg.
What would a symbol for programmers look like? Well, many of them do have completely round heads…

    Alcohol ‘irrelevant’ in rape

We need to ask what is the ethos of the criminal injuries compensation fund. If it is akin to a insurance scheme that pays out to when we have been injured then there is every case for reduced payments to those who have placed themselves at greater risk. I fully agree that to be considered to be “to blame” for being raped (or mugged) is offensive and plain wrong however in terms of compensation some allowance for risks taken may be appropriate. My insurance will not pay out if I leave my car unlocked although the crime is still not justified. In fact I have to pay a higher premium because I am guilty of not owning a garage!

There is also the issue of psychological consequences. Many victims suffer because they no longer feel safe in the situation they were in. If the consequence is the victim no longer leave the house even in daylight this is a more severe situation than if the victim can no longer walk down dark alleys drunk.

These are general points and are not directed to the woman in the case referred to especially as she claims not to have been drinking to excess!

I also have to question the use of sex discrimination law. As this policy applies to all forms of attacks how is sex discrimination used when young men are by far the highest target of violence?

I’m back from my hols safe, sound and slightly damp. Considering we normally go to mad places like The Lakes and Wales the English Riviera was disappointingly moist. We have had better weather in the afore mentioned rain traps but never mind we had a good time. Maybe because of the weather we did a lot of travelling about and this was my first holiday with a Sat Nav so I was quite interested in the difference it made. One thing was, I never quite got to grips with the local roads. It could be the location, I remember last year in The Lakes there seemed to be only one road where as
