March 24th is Shutdown Day

Are you addicted to your computer? No really, are you? I am, I admit it. If there were such a thing as Computerholics Anonymous I would probably join. I am not alone in finding it very hard to go without a computing fix for a day, and family holidays where computers are banned for a whole week would be nightmarish were it not for the web browsing enabled smartphone I carry with me.

Which is why I am intrigued by Dennis Bystrov and Michael Taylor who pose the question: what if computer disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope?

If Shutdown Day proves a success we might just find out. The global experiment is set for March 24th, so you have exactly one month to get yourself prepared. As I write this, some 14,656 folk have said they will be switching off while 2209 remain firmly in the no way Jose camp. Obviously, if this experiment is to be anything other than a little bit of fun it needs a whole lot more than that to participate.

Trouble is, if I turn my laptops, desktops, servers, smartphones and games consoles off what the heck will I do with myself?

Want a PlayStation 3? Want a kosher UK Sony PlayStation 3? Want one on the 23rd March, the official date of release in the UK? Of course you do, because like me you are a technology obsessed early adopting geek who just has to be in on such cutting edge technology from the get go. Ever since I first saw one in action, in the flesh, in the US I have known I would be buying one.

Sure, I could have gone Japanese, I could have gone American, I could have ordered via eBay. But I didn
