Why don’t mobile’s work when you need them to?

We’ve all been there. Desperately needing to make or receive and important call, but staring straight at the little bars of sorrow that is the signal levels of your mobile phone.

It happens more often than I’d like it to on my iPhone, but I’ve managed to work around the issue by carrying around a PAYGO Orange phone too. Drastic measures, some may say, but it seems to be working for me. Unlike the poor souls in the video below who could well do with a second blower as back-up.

iPhone makes its debut on stage at Wembley

Take That, the rejuvenated 90s boy band, are gearing up to play Wembley again in July…

This news will no doubt excite all the fans from way back when (yes, I was one of them) as well as the new bunch of followers from the second time around, but the concerts also offer a little something for tech heads too.

Solo artist Gary Go plans to go on stage as Take That’s support act armed with nothing but an iPhone as backing for some of his time in the spotlight.

He’s already penned some tunes making use of an app on the device and now, for at least some of his support songs, he’ll ditch musical instruments or a backing band in favour of his shiny iPhone.

“I think it’s pretty amazing that I’m going to be using a mobile phone on stage at Wembley Stadium in front of so many people,” he told the Evening Standard in an interview. “My biggest worry is that my phone will ring mid-song.”

Susan Boyle: web of success

Britain’s Got Talent has a lot to answer for.

Often, it’s the auditions we tune in to, just so we can laugh at the poor, deluded souls whose friends and family are either too nice to say they don’t have any talent, or perhaps too cruel to save them from public humiliation.

But every now and again, these reality shows strike gold. And they’ve done it again with Scot Susan Boyle.

She appeared on stage to sniggers but they soon disappeared and turned to awe once she opened her mouth and starting single I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables. Her voice was stunning and she, naturally, won the praise of judges Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan and Simon Cowell.

Since then, Susan has become somewhat of an internet phenomenon. Stats suggest that clips of her warbling have now been viewed on the web more than 100 million times – a figure that is growing considerably all the time.

It’s yet another example of what the power of the internet - coupled with talent, of course – can do.

Susan’s also been the subject of less admirable advances. It’s rumoured that an adult film company has tried to offer her $1million for a starring role in a porn film.

Many believe that computer games are completely bad for you and have no benefits whatsoever in a modern society. New research has just been published which may counter that theory.
Boffins at the University of Rochester in New York reckon that action-packed video games could actual improve impaired vision rather than having the previously thought opposite effect.

C.S. Green and D. Bavelier from the university’s department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, claim such activity can augment contrast sensitivity and ability to react to changes in our surroundings quickly using visual information.

The researchers hope to use their findings to help treat case of amblyopia, or lazy eye.

“Playing action video games enhances several different aspects of visual processing; however, the mechanisms underlying this improvement remain unclear,” the report states.

“Here we show that playing action video games can alter fundamental characteristics of the visual system, such as the spatial resolution of visual processing across the visual
field…”
