Yes, that is correct, British Telecom are going to screw us for their pension fund deficits by charging more for the bills we’ve already settled.

If you have a BT business line, they are making retrospective increases in charges and backdating them to November 2007. If you don’t believe it, the transcript of our on-line bill is below, received today, May 5, 2009 at 18:18, complete with all its inverted commas or lack of.

“For the first time in over 5 years our landline rates are changing.

If you’ve been tracking the Retail Price Index in the UK, you know it’s risen by over 17% in the last five years. During that time (with the exception of a few older ISDN products that are being retired), we’ve held down the cost of our business line rental.

As of 1st November 2007, our business line rental rates are increasing by 4.8%, which is in line with the Retail Price Index at the time of our pricing review. However, when you take into account the rise in the Retail Price Index over the last 5 years, even after this increase, in real terms the cost of your standard business line rental has fallen significantly since 2002.

The increased rental charge will be reflected on your bill from the beginning of November 2007”.
