Who’d have thought it? Most of the time it just sits there doing very little. Type ‘top’ into Terminal to see it, feet up and half asleep, waiting for us to titillate its silicone synapses. Even doing heavy Photoshopping or similar graphics stuff, the CPU’s use less than 1%. Read more

Streaming abdabs

People are funny where Apple is concerned. For example: Martin our ISP, is so vehemently anti anything Apple he refuses to let iPhones send mail from their owner’s accounts on his servers. iPhones can receive mail but not reply to it unless they have an account elsewhere whose smtp server let’s iPhone mail through – which is probably nearly all of them. Martin has no problem with other smartphones, just Apple’s. It seems the most rabid stances taken in any discussion about Apple comes from those against rather than the so-called fanboys. Read more

Frozen in Time Machine

Wednesday: back to work after the New Year, drove to the office, negotiated the dicey icy side streets to find the main roads clear. Only self and one other, who had travelled nearly 100 miles, turned up at the office. Staff living within walking distance all decided it was too dangerous to venture out even though the pavements were clear. Many excuses offered including that the very roads I had driven on were impassable. Offered to drive round to pick them up but told to go home instead. Read more

EyeTV gets smarter

Elgato’s new EyeTV update released last week is ideal for any foodie. We caught Jamie Oliver’s programme on wild mushrooms, where he and Gennaro Contaldo scout around a forest, finding ceps and chicken of the woods. Gennaro gave Jamie some useful identification tips along with beautiful close ups of the fungi. If only we had set EyeTV to record it because we get a lot of mushrooms in our wooded garden. iGate took another turn for the worst recently when the BBC announced they were moving streaming services from Akamai to Level 3 Communications. This latest skirmish is just another in the war between the BBC and Internet Service Suppliers.
