Windows 7

I realise that every blogger under the sun is going to be blabbing on about Windows 7 for a long time to come after the first public beta has become available over this weekend. Being the Windows fanboy that I am I have already jumped on the bandwagon. I was lucky enough to pick it up easily yesterday afternoon, it downloaded in a nice time and I installed it, first on a virtual pc and when I discovered that wouldn’t cut it for properly playing with it I installed it on another partition I already had, the dual boot works perfectly as it did before so I’m very happy.
Unlike Vista the difference between its predecessor and Windows 7 seems to be behind the scenes rather than appearance. The taskbar is different - using icons rather than text to identify running programs, the Notification area in the bottom right is now a lot les cluttered as it lets you control what appears down there with a bit more accuracy.
The Start menu is very similar to Vista only making a difference to ordering and not much else. There is also a new feature called ‘Homegroup’ which I’m yet to explore as it requires more than one pc running Windows 7 from what I can gather its used to make home networking a tiny bit easier by setting passwords for access etc.
Apart from that and the different wallpaper I havent noticed many appearance differences … oh wait ..

Paint looks different!
Now using a different layout for the tools Paint has a few more pretty features which is a welcome change.
Performance however is much better - It seems to be running a lot more smoothly than vista did, and thats coming from someone who loved Vista at all costs!

I too have jumped on the Windows 7 train. Big things I noticed was the time it took to install - it was very quick and I used to run Vista on the same PC and it took forever to install, also the OS itself seems (at fist glance) to be more stable that vista ever seemed to be on the PC. that said it has no other apps yet. It also seemed to be much faster than Vista overall. More testing required but, yes it is a very big step in the right direction.

Hi Mike, I don’t want to install on my main PC but I would like to try it on my Asus EEE. I’m looking into whether I’d be able to boot from the SD card (there’s a 16GB one residing in my EEE so plenty of space). I’ll let you know if I get it working

I’d agree with that quick install time, I also think the shutdown time is nice and snappy, not sure on the boot time yet but I’ll time it soon enough.
I just love some of the great features which I think arent only flashy but useful too!
Win7 on an EEE? brave brave person - although I’ve just read that its possible (not sure about the sd card bit) so may the force be with you.
