I came across this article while procrastinating (I have assignments to do lol).

It got me thinking as I can see this from both sides of the discussion.
BC (before college) I would not have considered the implications of what went on behind the scenes of a piece of software - hey, it works and I’m a happy user. Of course, if it fails then there’s always the help desk (or the ’round file’). As the artclae states, the user sees the interface as the program and never considers (or rarely) how those answers or whatever appear on the screen. However, now I’ve done a (very) little programming as part of my IT course I bow down and worship those that can get their heads around programming even the simplest of software - as for the games I play, well, wow!
So, how prevalent do you think this way of thinking is? Do you think the programmer and their work is ‘just the icing on the cake’? If you can, please read the article and let me know what you think.

From my experience Sharon it is fairly common - especially now that users have access to tools like Spreadsheets and Access - everyone is a programmer - or at least they think they are. Most of the time though people see things from the surface and have very little appreciation of the work that is required behind the scenes.
It is not just limited to programming though - this kind of thinking happens across the board. Have you ever heard any of these:
“My eight year old nephew designs web sites so we should let him do our corporate one.”
“We need a good quality photographic image for our new brochure - Bob down in Engineering has a 5MP camera and is good at taking photos…”
“We need a new company logo but only have $20 to spend on it”
“My laptop isn’t working can you have a quick look at it for me?”

Oh I have heard those! As soon as I say I’m doing IT everyone wants to ask me questions about everything - never mind that I’m into web design and not building/repairing/networking…
