New AVG (free version)

Anyone else use the free AVG? Anyone having a bit of a problem finding the free upgrade download?
For the last week or so I’ve had a box pop-up asking me to download the latest version of AVG. Fair enough. Today I get a message saying support for my current version will run out at the end of May. OK, I’ll upgrade now then…
Clicking on the available button takes you to the AVG site but I’ll be damned if I can find a way to get the free version from this point. There’s simply no mention of it at all. In the end I put ‘avg free’ into Google and finally got the relevant page

Have used AVG for a bout 5 years now and The AVG free site has always been separate from the commercial site
This is obviously a deliberate strategy, but a search engine should find the AVG free site

Try using clamwin, it’s totally free and just as good, only thing is you need to set up the scan manually as it’s not on by default - however that is good because you can set it up weekly which should be plenty for any safe surfing citizen. Hope this helps.

Your linux shouldn’t need AV - just apply the patches religiously and often - as they are sometimes remotely exploitable - on the subject of this ideally make sure inbound ports are filtered with iptables so you can’t get any nasties in.
I personally have AV installed on linux (teh clamav) but only to filter the samba (Cifs) shares my server delivers to the “windows” side of the network.

The depth of AVG 8 (even free) is causing some issues with other programs, a particular one is Outpost Firewall 2008, where if Outpost is installed after AVG 8, it will recognise it and disable the Outpost anti-spyware for compatibility, but installing AVG 8 after Outpost can lead to problems.
We all know not to try to use more than one “resident” antivirus, but the increasing overlap between different product functionality is leading to greater potential for conflicts.
