Leave the classics alone

Not content with wanting to redo the classic Rocky Horror Show the powers have now thought it a good idea to ask Eoin Colfer to write another book for the Hitchhicker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. Eeeek!

Would an artist want to go to the Mona Lisa and think “Hey, maybe if I touch it up here and then alter that bit of background there, oh hell, why not repaint the whole thing. I’m sure it’d be better and fans would appreciate it.”

Yes I miss DA’s wonderful writing and humour and geekiness. Yes I read the unfinished book in the Salmon of Doubt and was upset that it would never be finished. But DA cannot be replaced/redone/reinvented, heck not even he could be resurrected.

Colfer is a good writer, I enjoy all his books (yes I know they’re aimed at kids but…). However, he is not Douglas Adams; he can never know what was going on in Adams’ mind when he was writing. Even if he studies the characters for a month of Sundays I doubt he will ever catch the whole essence of Adams and will end up producing a hybrid book which may or may not be well received by DA fans.

Having said that - I will end up buying the book just to see.

OK rant off for today.

There can’t be any artistic reason for letting Eoin Colfer to write another Hitchhiker-book. Sequels, don’t talk to me about sequels! Hate them!

This is by far the most disturbing piece of news I’ve heard all year. I can only hope that this sixth book will not be as disastrous as Disney’s movie.

Of course, I might be pleasantly surprised. Nonetheless, it still won’t be a book by Adams. I will never be able to look at this book and think of it as the ending as he truly intended. Still, I do hope it’s good.
