I started off years ago with a blog on Blogger. It was nice enough and merged well with Google. But recently I’ve been wanting something a little different, more grown-up maybe. Seeing as IT Pro blogs through WP I thought I’d use it myself.

I did look at other CMS, Drupal is what my brother uses now for his site and I’ve been wanting to try Joomla too but in the end, as time was short, I went with what I know.

It took a while to get Blogger imported - in the end I used one of my old ‘hosted by WP’ sites to import and then exported that file to import into my new self-hosted blog (are you with me so far?). Then it was playtime.

There’s loads of gorgeous (and not so) free WP templates available out there. I will be doing my own when I have a little spare time but for now was grateful to those designers who give their hard work away. I tried out about five, the one I have eventually chosen wasn’t the one my daughter really liked but I do and it’s MY blog (ha ha).

My next project is to set up WP on my own business site rather than it being hosted by WP themselves. I should have done it properly in the first place but I didn’t think it out properly at the time. Pesky kids, housework etc.

Anyhow, if you want to check it out and let me know what you think I now reside at www.histrel.me.uk

Personally I’m still using Blogger & to a lesser extent Livejournal, as it’s a no-hassle thing. As I no longer pay for any external web/hosting - I’d simply have to pay to put my personal blog online… something I try to avoid.

Of course I could host it at the end of my DSL line on my server… but performance for visitors would be way lower than getting Google to do it for me.
