Open or closed? Whose choice?

The gist is that the Ts&Cs for this company state you cannot knowingly or unknowingly leave your wi-fi unencrypted. If you do they will cut you off.

OK, firstly, how are they going to find out? Can we see plain-clothes vans in the neighbourhoods with ‘legal’ war-riders inside checking for infringers?

Secondly, have they got the right to do this? A purchased product should be free of such restrictions surely? OK, there may be an argument that an open wi-fi could use more bandwidth and therefore incur a larger charge. But is this reason enough?

It seems that as consumers our rights are slowly being eroded away: we have games with inhibiting security features, it’s still not entirely legal to rip your own CD or DVD for personal use on other devices or for backup purposes and now we can’t use our wi-fi how we want.

Is it getting time that we stood up for ourselves?
