IT for the future?

My son has just received his choices for GCSEs. He goes to a maths and IT specialist college. There is one optional module on Graphic Products, the only other IT offered seems to be a compulsory ICT module.

This module will cover emails, databases etc - you know, the usual. The second part is dealing with audio; creating audio effects and so on to go with a video or as a podcast.

There are no opportunities for those interested in how a computer works, programming, networking.

My son isn’t really interested in IT - he’s a science guy - so the choices offered do not affect him (or me) but am I being unreasonable when I ask why students are not being given more options that may be relevant to a career in IT? The school is offering Fine Art, Ceramics, Business Studies and Travel & Tourism amongst others so why not some more specialised IT?

I realise that teachers may not have the background to teach something like programming but surely that can be solved?  I feel that the IT sector is being let down by those who are supposed to be preparing the employees and entrepreneurs of the future.

It is a shame, programming in particular seems to be falling by the wayside.
Mind you, the industry isn’t helping much as there are so many different flavours to choose from and by the time you think you have one figured out another one comes along.

We still use Cobol here - try and find a course for that these days.
