Wireless winners (and losers)

I have just read the report from the BBC about Ofcom’s decision to allow a wider band of spectrum available to mobile broadband services.

Hurray I thought. Then I read down the page and realised that it’s not good news for my husband’s industry - he works as DJ, Karaoke host, singer, Quizmaster etc in pubs, clubs and hotels.

For the PSME industry (Programme Making and Special Events), worth an estimated £15bn, radio mics - which rely on spectrum to work - are crucial.

Now it faces eviction from Channel 69, which operates at the top of the 800Mhz band and, according to the British Entertainment Industry Radio Group (BEIR) is the only channel where radio mics can be guaranteed to work from any location in the UK.

My husband is an entertainer who has invested in a radio mic. He, and countless others, may now have to reinvest in updating their equipment. Most entertainers (especially at my husband’s end of the scale) are struggling at the moment due to various government regulations over licenses and the recession causing venues to cut their budgets.

So our interests are going to divide us on this point. It seems that where there are gains there must always be losers.
