Piratical genius strikes again

Yet again, The Pirate Bay has impressed me and I am pretty sure you will be impressed too. Well, that is if you are not anti-filesharing or a member of the Swedish Government.

Still reading? Good stuff.

Hopefully you will be aware of the move from torrent site to political party that has been occurring over the past few months. The Pirate Party have been gathering momentum across Europe and running in elections to get their message across that the internet should be a free space for users to share content.

The party didn’t get very far in the UK to be honest, however in Sweden they actually managed to get some members in power.

So, how does this link back to The Pirate Bay? Well, there is a type of get out clause in the Swedish constitution that allows members of parliament to be immune from criminal prosecution if they do something as part of their political mandate.

To take advantage of this, the party is planning on running The Pirate Bay from the Swedish Government’s own servers, keeping it protected from closure.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I think this is genius for three reasons.

1 – I approve of sticking it to the man, as it were. It may be sad but I am still the protestor I was through university at heart and to see such a small party take on the big guns of Government from the inside and find a loophole to really grate them, definitely makes me smile.

2 – The technicalities behind it. I love that people who believe in a free internet and the freedom technology can bring actually know how to execute it. It is great to see anyone cheering for a team, but it is even better if they know the game.

3 – The pure determination. The Pirate Bay has been knocked down time and time again, even leading those who are the most passionate about to prison and to hefty fines. To continue to fight the fight in the face of such diversity is something I think we can all admire.

There is no guarantee this will work and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Government in Sweden finds a way to stop it from happening, but well done to The Pirate Party and Pirate Bay for their sheer determination and, let’s be honest, pure cheek.
