Windows Phone 7: Fit for business?
Much of the talk today at the Windows Phone 7 launch was about the consumer aspects of the devices. Not much fuss was made over the enterprise aspects of the device.
However, there should have been more discussion over business use given the evident qualities of the new OS.
Among the various impressive features is the ability to filter email while on the go, while the start screen can keep users informed about what meeting they are due at next, be it business or pleasure.
With calendars, users can differentiate between their different lives. Simple colour coding combined with a straightforward layout allows the user to easily prioritise between their different calendars.
“Lots of business users have a social life and a family life as well. If your boss tells you that you need to stay back till 7pm you might need to know if there is maybe something happening with your kids or something else you need to do,” explained Oded Ran, head of consumer marketing for Windows Phone UK at Microsoft.
“You can actually synchronise as many calendars as you want,” he told IT PRO.
He showed how the user is able to see all the different calendars simultaneously to make life simple.
“If you think about business users, they are also consumers in the sense that they want phones which are beautiful [and make] it easy to open their email or their calendars,” he added.
Furthermore, Ran claimed Windows 7 offers the “best-in-class” Office integration and Outlook capabilities.
One major talking point at the minute is mobile security, and Ran explained that Windows Phone 7 includes a number of features to keep data secure on the device.
He pointed in particular to a feature called Find My Phone, which is free and will be available as soon as Windows Phone 7 is launched.
It is a live service that helps users find their phones when they are on silent. By heading online, users can ask the service to ring the phone, which will put out a loud ringtone to help locate the device.
The service also allows owners to lock their phones with a new pin code if they go missing. Furthermore, it gives them the ability to leave messages on the device to let whoever finds the device know who the owner is and where it can be returned to.
Remote wiping is another feature that will help both business and consumer users keep their information safe, Ran added.
The above features and others make Windows Phone 7, on first look, more than fit for business.
