Watch out, watch out, there’s an Indian zombie about!

I am a sucker for three things: statistics, Indian food and the horror genre. So, imagine my delight when I discovered today that there are more zombies in India than anywhere else in the world.

The Indian zombie stat came as part of the Commtouch Q3 2010 Internet Threats Trend Report, and specifically states that for the second quarter in a row India is the country with the most zombies, representing some 14 percent of all zombies globally. That’s one hell of a lot of zombies, and more than could be dealt with by your average shotgun wielding zombie killer I imagine. Indeed, according to the same report, during this quarter there were approximately 339,000 zombies activated every single day. That’s an increase of 30,000 zombies per day when compared with the previous quarter.

I guess it should come as no great surprise though, when you consider that during mid-September for example there was something in the region of 198 billion spam emails sent every single day and we all know that spam remains the favoured vehicle with which to distribute zombie creating malware. Commtouch reports that the use of malicious HTML attachments has increased significantly during the year so far. “The increased use of HTML attachments shows how prominent the multi-stage attack vector has become” admits Commtouch Vice President Asaf Greiner.

Outside of the email realm, you are most likely to encounter malware when visiting pornographic or sexually explicit websites apparently. Perhaps it’s just as well I didn’t extend my ’sucker for’ list to four things then…
