Freesat - do we need another digital TV platform?

Today is the official launch of Freesat, effectively the satellite TV version of the Freeview digital television service.
The concept is simple: Buy a cheap box from a high street retailer like Argos, Comet or an independent, either hook it up to an existing Sky digital dish or spend about £80 for a man in a van to come round and supply and fit a dish, plug in and start watching around 80 free to air TV channels, including HD channels.

Late last night, I could hear screams of terror and desperation all around me.
No, I had not turned the volume up on my home cinema system too loud while watching The Gate, but rather it was the sound of 300,000 customers of Amazon.co.uk’s UK DVD rental service recoiling in horror at the news that Amazon has sold its service to rival LoveFilm in return for a 1/3 stake in the business. Predictions for 2008

One thing is certain this year; the technology sector is going to be busy.
2008 is going to be a landmark year, with several technology shifts on the horizon and companies set for fierce competition as the tough trading conditions in countries such as the US create problems for the more blinkered hardware, software and services companies that have failed to look behind their home market. Those that see the bigger global picture will be stepping up their efforts to grab market share or establish a foothold in emerging markets such as China, Eastern Europe and parts of Africa.
Here is my list of ten technology predictions for 2008 – I am confident about these, but just to be on the safe side I won’t be backing them up with cash bets this year. Read more
