PSP - Ultimate media player?

I admit it, I’ve spent money on gadgets again  - so have an semi expensive credit card bill to settle this month :(

This time though its on something I’ve really been enjoying on the 3 hours I’m spending on the train daily to London.   - A PSP, hence the title, which I picked up with a 2Gb card and 2 games for £160 last week…

I admit I’m not using it that much for games (although the Megadrive collection is excellent for a quick blast of Golden Axe) - more the excellent screen to watch coverted DVD’s on the move.    The battery life is amasing so far, it typically can run for my commute easily, and I have managed 2 days on a single charge before!..

Reason for the PSP vs say an Archos, is the screen and pure versatility - yes it may only have 2Gb (or 4Gb with a 4Gb card) of storage, but thats (from my experience),  a good 2 movies + 2-3 episodes of a tv show in my experience.    And, when I get bored of the movies, I can always dig into a retro game of Sonic, Golden Axe etc, all without even swapping the disk.

Oh and the new slim-n-lite PSP charges off usb also, so I can charge it in the office using the standard Blackberry cable in the event it ever does run out…

Only thing I’d say is does anyone have any experience of 3rd party batterys so I can use it on long-haul flights ?  (that or I’ll have to buy a spare to last 8+ hours).

Don’t forget wi-fi for surfing etc - plus, if you have a PS3, you can link to it over wi-fi and watch movies or listen to music stored on there.

I must admit I haven’t used my PSP for much more than games so far but it does have lots of potential.

Not sure about 3rd party batteries, I don’t travel that far.

I agree, the PSP is great as a media device. The clunky UMD drive is where most of the battery life gets sucked out, so if you’re not hammering it with games and just watching video it lasts for ages.

And the navigation is fantastic - effectively kills the need for dedicated PMPs as far as I’m concerned.

3rd party battery’s … Mmmmmm bit of a lottery, but P S A Parts are absolutely the best at supplying decent 3rd party ones whether it be lapop, camera or gaming consoles. T: 0870 873 2002
