Considering a Career Change

Hello everyone. It’s been awhile since I wrote here, so I thought I would again.
I’m in a quandry.
Really.
I want to change careers.
Yes, that’s right, I am thinking about moving away from IT into another field entirely! There are other fields out there, honest.
The problem is that I have worked, in one way or another, in IT since I left school (14 years ago!)
Okay, this isn’t a problem. The best thing about living where I do is that salaries are quite low and I’m not exactly a senior member of staff, so I should be able to find a relatively entry level job with only a slight drop in salary (a couple of grand a year), that and I currently have a second helpdesk job to boost my salary.
The other problem is finding something that really appeals to me!
Oh hum, so any thoughts people? Should I move on.
New Software… for the sake of it

Okay, soooo, where to begin.
It starts with Office 2003, it’s not like we couldn’t do the same things in Office 2000, or Office XP even. But, we’ve not got Office 2003. It doesn’t allow us to produce letters or reports faster, but it’s newer (not as new as next year’s Office, obviously) and, therefore, an “essential upgrade.”
So, why do so many get into a tizzy when it comes to needing the newest version of something. Now, OS’s are a different kettle of fish. It’s often nice to have the latest OS, but it’s not always to just around implementing, especially if you’ve got more than a handful of machines, and then there’s the problem of some of your older software not running! That’s a good reason to upgrade your software, of course.
Oh, this goes for our Mac friends, as well. I know a couple of Mac zealots who kept saying “Oh, my old iBook just doesn’t cut it anymore when I’m video editing or playing music” I asked what they meant and they wouldn’t be referring to render time, or the fact that their Mac’s were unable to import video or play a particular mp3, it was just the feeling that they had that their Mac wouldn’t cut it… despite the fact that it could still import video and still play an mp3. Obviously, they told me, the new Mac does it faster…. plays an mp3 faster? imports video faster? I see.
Anyway, back to my point. There was one, honest.
I often wonder if we use the software we’ve got to anywhere near it’s full potential before we ditch it for a newer version. If the newer version has an essential feature, then yes, we should go for it. However, I don’t recall using any of the newer features of Word when I’ve been typing regular office stuff, nor when I’ve been calculating in Excel. Yet, we moved to Office 2003 so that we could be more productive… more productive at what?
Anyway, Sunday morning ramble over…. I’ll get back to upgrading something now :o)
