Samsung D900 - the fun and games of a new mobile

Took a call last week from o2 offering me a new mobile phone on my contract (assuming I take out an 18 month contract.)  They offered me the Samsung D900, so it seemed rude to say “No.”

Now, I have had the mobile for just over 3 days and I have to say, it’s mint!

I’ll miss the Nokia N91 Smartphone and there are already features I miss, but so far I’m impressed by the slim form factor of the D900 slide phone - admittedly, I am sliding it up and down gingerly as I’m convinced it’s going to fall to bits on me.

I do often wonder, however, why there isn’t an actual standardised implementation for text entry - I don’t mean typing words, cos there is for that, I mean entering symbols, changing the words using T9, inserting a space, etc.  So far, I look a bit stupid trying to enter words as I either change it to numbers when I want to change the word (the Nokia uses the * key to change the word, the Samsung uses * to switch text entry to number entry), or putting spaces in (Nokia - 0 key, Samsung - # key.)  I just feel that, in this day and age, it’d be far more intuitive if everyone used the same method!  It’s not like there are different keys on the numeric keypad!

Rant aside, I do like the phone.  It has some Picsel software to allow me to view (but not edit) a variety of documents, which comes in useful for spreadsheets in theory until you realise that it just appears to render them as (possibly) a webpage (I’m probably wrong here.)  However, I can zoom in and search, so that’s not too bad.  I’ll probably master the camera at some point (3 megapixel) which is, usefully, hidden when the phone is slid down (a feature of my D500 that I thought was quite a smart idea), and I might even buy a Mini-SD card to stick in it.

Anyway, here’s a smart phone, that isn’t a smartphone (see what I did there!)

How’s the battery life?

Comment by Dave Adamson - April 18, 2007 on 9:08 pm

Battery life has been about 3 days with a couple of hours of voice use. However, I’ve been doing all sorts with the phone - transferring, bluetoothing, setting stuff up, and what have you - which I probably won’t need to do as much in the future. I’ll let everyone know how the battery life goes when I’ve settled in a more regular user pattern.

Got one too about 6 months ago and I love it. My only gripe is the text keys also. Battery life is much better than I thought it would be, mine usually lasts 4-5 days before it needs charging. Admittedly I do not spend all day on it, probably an hour a day and a few texts. But it beats the Blackberry 8100 that I use for work. 2-3 days if I’m lucky and with just a little more usage… As for setting up the D900 beats the Bb8100 hands down.
