Vista SP1 - Let the excitement begin!

I was a bit surprised to see that Microsoft have released Vista SP1 for download from Microsoft Windows Update, with automatically download to follow in mid April.
It then struck me that my circle of colleagues has changed slightly. You see, I distinctly recall being around different workmates during the days of XP SP1 and 2 and the “excitement” that some of them seemed to be awash with at the thought of the release of the Service Packs.
This got me thinking. Is it actually normal to get excited at the release of a bunch of bug fixes and security patches? Okay, I guess XP’s SP did introduce new features to the game - particularly, I seem to recall, that program customisation thing where you could say whether you wanted certain programmes to be default or not.
Anyway, back to Vista SP1, I read with interest that it might cause certain programmes to “lose functionality.” If you ask me, that’s a fantastic way of saying “stop working properly.” It’s up there, for me, with “enter a non-power up situation” which we used to call “won’t switch on.” I’m sure that Microsoft and the vendors of these programs will be working towards resolving this sooner rather than later.
For me, I’ll probably download the update… eventually. What I really do hope for is a change to the protection system that asks me if I want to authorise a particular action. I know I can turn it completely off, but what I want to do is create a whitelist of activities and applications (very much as I would with a software firewall) that only cause alerts if, for some reason, the application in question has changed since the last time I used it. I’ve not found a way to do this with Vista, but then I haven’t really looked that hard!
With the update in mind, though, how many users are planning on installing the SP on their hardware? Will you be waiting until the wrinkles have been ironed out, or will you be looking at alternate programs to get you through the day? More importantly, are you rushing to the Microsoft Update tool right now in order to download the SP just because you have to?

I’m usually excited by updates - especially on my PS3 (DivX finally!)- but frankly Vista SP1 has got me running scared. I’ll try and put it off until after I’ve completed my college semester so if it does mess everything up at least I don’t have esay deadlines…oh and I’ll be backing up & setting a restore point before I do install. Am I sounding paranoid?
