Why are writable CD’s called CDR’s? That’s R for Riteable is it? Except re-writables are called RW’s (Wre-Riteables?).

CDR should be CD “Readable” but all CD’s are readable (in theory, you do get non readable disks but they are called “coffee mats”).

It’s as bad as RAM. Just about all memory these days is Random Access - ie accessible in any order as opposed to tapes which are only accessed sequentialy. Certainly ROM, PROM and EPROM chips are all random access - ie RAM. It’s just that RAM has come to mean read write memory RWM (or WRM) doesn’t sound so good though. Writeable and readable memory would have been OK but WARM chips sound like they are overheating or something that come with fish. RAM is just a macho name - people (er men?) like a machine with lots of RAM.

My problem is with my internal memory - ie my brain. More and more of it seems to be becoming WOM - Write Only Memory. It all goes in but nothing comes out again - now what was I doing? erm…
