My old trusty laptop (I say laptop, it was anything but - it was a desktop replacement) finally bit the bullet after four years so I am typing this on my new HP Mobile Workstation 8710w. It took quite a bit of digging around looking at different specifications to finally decide to settle upon this make and model which sees me riding with my head up high straight back in to the HP fold (my first laptop was a HP) - most everything else we have is HP so it feels right at home. When looking into the replacement I wanted to ensure I kept the 17″ Widescreen, a decent graphics card as I do a lot of graphics work but also get a Blu-Ray Drive and an XP downgrade (until I feel a little braver!) which finally led me to the HP. Other machines under consideration were the Dell XPS M1730, Sony Vaio VGN-AR61ZU and the Toshiba Qosmio X300 (though not all of these machines had the features just mentioned).

I have been running it for a few days and all is going well - I opted for the Vista downgrade back to XP just to be on the safe side though the option is there to move up should the time arise. It makes a change not having to wait ages for things to start-up though no doubt I’ll get used to the speed of this machine after a month or two. One other major factor is the weight difference - the old laptop was a monster to literally drag around (the laptop bag was on wheels) but this machine feels much lighter and easily fits into my laptop rucksack - to which I am now a convert (rucksacks are so much more flexible than traditional laptop bags). The fingerprint scanner for logging in and the single-sign on are both handy features and the dedicated numeric pad really helps when number crunching.

If only I could a faster Internet speed where I live I would be really happy - so much for leaving too far from the local Exchange!

By the way, if you have an interest in your Broadband speed - I have put together a list of twelve speed testers over on my other blog.
