Naughty smokers can’t get their Macs fixed

I think I should let you all know now that a) I am a smoker and b) I am a PC user. Nevertheless, the news this week, as reported by our sister title PC Pro, has left me rather rage filled.
Apparently the wise people at Apple are refusing to fix smokers’ machines as they think that tobacco residue will collect inside its computers and pose a health risk to its workers. Some bright spark at a repair centre in the US even referred to the machines as being contaminated with biohazard.
Look, I can understand that if you purposefully damage your computer then you don’t deserve the help. I would even go so far to say if you do something stupid like spill Gin and Tonic all over it (this was a *friend* that did this, not me) you may perhaps have to pay part of the charge, but smoke residue? If you have been blowing smoke up into your base unit that is one thing but come on…
Smokers have spent most of the past few years being demonised with the public being informed we are all trying to kill them with our second-hand smoke. We have been banned from the restaurants, pubs and clubs and the hateful ways we are talked about by those in the press or even the less than kindly person walking past us on the street has reached fever pitch.
I can deal with this, I understand others’ dislike, even hatred, of my habit but for Apple now to tell me if I smoke in my home, the one place left where I am allowed to, then they wont fix my computer, regardless of the problem with it? Well, insert your own expletive here.
The company has just had to reform its terms and conditions thanks to intervention from the Office of Fair Trading in the UK. Perhaps the repair centres in the US carrying out this particularly ridiculous stipulation may have to do the same.

Quite right.
About time there was some payback for all of the Nicotine (and CO2) that you addicts have been pumping into the air.
